Great Gear, Great Sound
For most people when it comes to professional audio equipment, a mere glimpse at all of the knobs, buttons, and dials…even the sheer number of them…is reason enough to be intimidated and to steer clear. But for the audiophile and sound guru, casting their gaze and putting their hands on pro audio equipment is the ticket to paradise!
Those gifted with decent hearing can enjoy the brilliant effects of the artistic wizardry of a great sound person. For sure most of us have endured the cringing results of bad sound. When it comes to bad, I’m thinking of a recent wedding reception I attended where they had all the right equipment, but clearly no clue how to use it properly. The distortion resonating throughout the huge spacious room made me cringe and distort my face. YUK!
Then, there’s the magic that even in a small venue or recording studio, a great sound person can work with the equipment they’re given. It’s not really noticeable at first…until your heart soars and goose bumps tingle all over your body…because the sound touched a nerve, a chord, and resonated in a place deep within.
Typically, when people talk about professional audio equipment, they’re referring to mixing consoles, amplifiers, microphones, and loudspeakers. Wikipedia has a pretty good article that you can read if you want to by clicking on Pro Audio Equipment.
Additional items that are typically found in the professional audio category are cables, computer recording, monitors & speakers, multi-track recorders, rack gear, and all sorts of parts and accessories.
You’ve likely heard the adage “you get what you pay for.” Generally, in pro sound equipment as in other areas, this is true. However, if you know what you’re looking for you can find some great pro sound equipment at bargain prices. Locating really awesome equipment being sold on the cheap has been made a whole lot easier because of the advent of the Internet. A mere search for “pro audio equipment” will turn up 6,990,000 results in Google. Clearly, there’s plenty to choose from. Like anything else though, “buyer beware.”
If you do decide to make an online purchase, make sure you’ve got yourself protected. Many credit care companies and other payment providers offer some real protections for the purchaser that you’d do well to look into before buying. Bottom line: make sure you can return what you’re getting within a reasonable time frame after personally inspecting it.
And finally, a BIG THANK YOU to all of you pro sound people who make our listening pleasures completely freakin awesome!
