I'd only get them a Dual Core if you expect them to trash it in under a year.
It really depends alot on their usage. But if you are a parent and want to corner them into only using weak programs to do home work and playing simple games instead of drowning themselves in MMORPG games, then I'd say go for it and they should be greatful to get a Laptop for free.
If you want them to be able to MMORPG with friends ( play online games that have great graphics and alot of violence but team building and stradegy), then I'd get them one with an i5 Processor that's atleast 2.2ghz. Normally I'd tell people to aim for 2.4 ghz but it should wear out with time and need to be replaced eventurally anyways when they can afford to buy one of their own.
The difference between the Duo and the i5 is that the Duo can only run up to two programs at 2 ghz ( actually the OS will take up a little processor so they'd be running at under 2.0 ghz, luckily Mac OS doesn't take up alot of processor) while the i5 can run four programs at beyond it's Ghz. Since the Mac OS doesn't consume alot of the Processor, then that also allows you to lower the GHZ on the processor a little. Since the i5 can automaticly adjust and overclock a little on it's own, you can find one at 2.0-2.4 ghz and it will be good for a High Schooler ( that's not a serious gamer).
Just make sure it has atleast 4 Gigs of a Ram, the Graphics/Video Card isn't an Intel ( those break in under a month usually).. go with Nvidia or ATI, and that the Graphics/Video Card is atleast 512 mb.. honestly you will probably want or find 1 gig Graphics/Video cards mostly and that's the very best balance for the memory on a Graphics/Video Card.
