What do I need to run a firewire recording interface?
I'm a guitarist (thrash/death metal + mellow sht if im in the mood) and in two bands, one of the bands I do guitar samples, but have yet to record anything (we're fresh-started on the band, met up with friends from 8+ years ago and started back up this music thing we did). Anyway, I'm planning on getting a recording interface *for me, I'm leaning more towards TC Electronic's Konnekt line* and i've been checking out the firewire ones. Right now, i'm back to my basic Dell 2400 (long story), everything factory stock but running great. What exactly do I need to run this firewire interface? What plugs into where? Also, if I get a USB one like Line6 tone pro ux2 or whatever it's called, I hear you have to plug it into the sound card...how do I do that? I'm not exactly a computer hardware person though I can fix and change things *ex. hard drive, sound card, etc* myself. Thanks in advance.
A firewire interface uses the 1394 port on a computer. Not all computers have this though, you need to check in your Device Manager if you have any. The actual port looks like a real fat USB port. So the way a Firewire Interface works is you plug your instruments / mics into the Firewire Audio Interface, then that converts your analog signal to a digital signal and sends it to your computer through the Firewire cable into the 1394 Port of your computer and shows up in the recording software for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. Your sound card has nothing to do with Audio Interfaces.
A USB Audio Interface is the same as Firewire except is goes into a USB port on your computer instead of a 1394 port. The main difference between firewire and USB is speed. Firewire is faster, which will cause less latency, which ends up being more quality recordings. Even with a USB audio interface, the sound card is not involved at all.
Although I haven't used the TC Konnekt Live before, it looks pretty dang awesome. I'm a fan of TC Electronics (I use their Correct and Create Voice Pedals). Although I am impressed with TC Electronics, I See that this Firewire Audio Interface only comes with Abelton Live. Which isn't really a top of the line recording software. Here's the Konnekt:

I'd recommend looking at the PreSonus Firebox becomes it comes with Cubase LE. I've used this interface and it has great quality and the price is a little cheaper.
