Ethernet Cable: A How To Guide
In order to make your own home Computer network means wiring it with ethernet cable, sockets and also ethernet plugs. Building your own ethernet network doesn't have to be hard, and for the do it yourselfer, follow these simple steps for a solid working network. In the case of ethernet cable the advantages of doing it yourself is that you can custom make the cable lengths for your requirements.
For instance, a twenty five foot long ethernet cable is hardly suitable when all you need is a two foot piece of wire. Follow these steps to wire your own network with ethernet cable.
The 1st phase is always to take an end of the cable and cut it straight. Follow this by stripping the external casing about an inch from the end. If you're fortunate enough to have a cabling tool this is a simple task as all you must do is apply pressure, rotate the Ethernet cable and then slide off the casing.
When this step is finished, you should have 4 pairs of twisted ethernet cable if you are using Cat 5 cable.
The pairs of stripped ethernet cable will each have one solid color and the other will be striped. These colors are usually blue, green, orange and brown. At this point separate the pairs so you will have 8 separate wires total. You then should arrange the wires in to the correct pattern for insertion into the plug. By flexing the cables manually they will be easier to work with. You'll find many wiring sequences utilized in Ethernet cable, in most cases diagrams of these may be simply found on the internet.
The fourth step should be to take the cables in sequence and insert them into the RJ45 plug. If the cables are not of equal length at this point it is usually worth making a straight cut across all of them. The moment you have slid the wires into the plug ensure that each with the exposed wires are in contact using the copper elements in the RJ45.
Use a crimping tool, or the stripping tool if you have one, to apply pressure to the Ethernet cable and connector to make the connection permanent. This can be accomplished by holding the crimping tool with your dominant hand and the ethernet cable in the other. Repeat the crimping of the ethernet cable and connector several times to ensure good contact.
