Chapman Stick and Mobius Megatar -- How to Approach Them
When a bass-player or guitar-player first encounters a dedicated two-handed tapping instrument, like the Chapman Stick or the Mobius Megatar touchstyle instruments, his past training predisposes him to think of problems.
And perhaps these problems he thinks do not exist.
He might think, "It seems like 12 strings on a tapping instrument (like Chapman Stick or Mobius Megatar instruments) might be an obstacle, and I wouldn´t really need this many strings."
We can understand where he's coming from. He probably spent years learning to play bass. (Same for any guitar player.) And now here's all these strings all over the place!
Why on earth would a person need all those strings?
It's a Natural Question
But like the country boy who saw a piano in the shop window on his first trip to the city said, "Gawrsh! How can you mash all them notes at the same time?"
And of course, you don't.
You simply select the ones you want, and having separate stringsets for the two hands doesn't make it more tricky ... it makes playing *simpler*.
Here's what's true, if you are a bass-player or guitar-player:
If you use a wise learning method and a sensible tuning in fourths, you'll *begin* by placing your left hand just above double dots at fret two on the bass strings.
Then place your right hand just above double dots at fret twelve on melody strings. In these two positions, the notes below your two hands across all six strings are *identical*.
Makes things simple. Because for your initial learning, you only have to learn *one* set of scales, and *one* set of chord shapes, and you can even train both hands at the same time.
This clarity, simplicity, and power produce very very rapid learning, and also allow you to very rapidly transfer 85%-95% of what you already know as a bass or guitar player.
Another Big Plus
And actually, all those years you were training your left hand ... you were not actually training your left hand.
You were training *your head.*
And you will be delighted to learn that your right hand is wired into the very same head!
You are lucky! Because you will discover that what your left hand knows ... your right hand almost knows already.
In other words, your left-hand skills transfer very fast to your right hand. Fast transfer of skills from bass or guitar to Megatar, and then fast tranfer from left hand to right hand.
Fast transfer of skills you already got.
Another Bass-Player Concern:
A bass-player might think, "Wouldn't it be good if the string distance could be wider, so it would maybe feel more like a bass?"
That's a reasonable question for a bass-player, right?
And for sure, a wider string distance *would* be more like a bass.
And if you were going to play it like a bass, that would be a good thing. However, if you're going to play it like a bass -- horizontal position, left hand fretting, right fingers slipping between the strings for plucking -- then a bass will perform much better than a touch-style instrument for that method. Fact.
And if you are going to play it like a touch-style instrument -- vertical position, fretting with both hands, playing mainly with the *flats* of the fingers using low pressure -- then wider strings would not be a good thing at all. You'd have to reach further to get to the same notes. That's no benefit.
And although a person can play touch-style on an 8-string bass, to do it you have to (mentally) divide the strings up into a region for left hand and a region for right hand. You could give 3 strings to bass, and then you can generally get melodies to work out on 5 melody strings. But that's not much range for bass.
OR .... you could give four or five strings to bass, but then that's not enough melody strings to play many written melodies.
AND ... to play good sounding (not muddy) chords on bass strings you usually place the root either on the low e-string or the low a-string and then you need four strings for the chord and that means you need six strings for bass.
AND ... your hands constantly fight over who gets to use the strings in the middle.
Two String-Sets Easier to Play
Fact: It is very much *EASIER* to use two separate stringsets of six strings, one set for each hand.
Two string-sets provides faster learning, provides clarity in the mind, and your two hands never need to fight over a string.
The left hand can play all the range of a 6-string bass, plus easy good-sounding four-string chords between frets one and nine.
The right hand can play all the range of melodies normally written on treble clef. The two hands can easily play unison melodies, which is easy as eating a sandwich, but which sounds really impressive to your audience.
If you try it, you will discover that playing with two stringsets of six is easier than playing on 8-strings, the mental map is clearer, and learning is far faster.

Mac or PC - what should I get?
Hi, I bought few days ago Traktro Scretch software, and Audio 8 Dj interface from Native Instruments. On the software it says that it runs on both systems Mac and PC (Windows).
What should I buy in order to use Traktor Scretch PC or Mac laptop?
I know that for the money I can get a well fit PC. However, some people say that Mac's, eventhoe thay are expancive, working better with art and music because they have other much better sowftware than PC dose. Like "Logic" - the ultimate music software. PC users do not have a chance to use the software because it was bought by Apple and only users who having Mac can use it.
So, what should I do?
For 2k I whould buy nice Dell laptop with 17" (1280x1024px) 8600GX graphic card, 500 GB hard D., 4 GB CPU, 2.6 Ghz processor.
For Mac 2.4Ghz Proces..., 4GB CPU, 250H.D..., 8600GX Graphic card. And very sadly 15" (1024x768px) =(

First, check and make sure that the Audio 8 DJ can work on both Mac and PC. Now, onto the debate, I'm a fellow composer and I have a Macbook Pro. It's true that Logic only runs on Mac. However, there are many professional composers who use PC out there. PC also has great sequencer programs like Sonar, Cubase, Nuendo, etc.
I have used PC with Sonar before and it's nice. However, I do like to give probs to the Mac because it does have a better OS that makes things simple and yes it's more stable. Macs do crash as well but far less often than the PC, and the hardware is top notch (hence the price).
But if you're going for a complete price vs performance dilemma, you might be better off with a PC.
