Is it safe to replace a light bulb with a lower watt one?
I had 65 watt light bulbs in my room and they work on a dimmer so the brand I need is about 10 bucks per light bulb and I need 10. The 45 watt ones are cheaper so I got those instead, same brand so they should work on the dimmer. But I know I had a problem once where my ceiling lights kept basically exploding and frying all the electric lines in my room, because I wasn't using the right watt. So is it okay?
Underlamping is always fine. It sounds like you ran into trouble before by overlamping your fixtures and over loading the circuit(s) in your room. Check to see where the circuits in your house are. You may have part of a circuit in your room and part of it elsewhere. The total amperage on that circuit cannot exceed 20A and really shouldn't get closer than 18A. And watts = volts x amps so you do the math. Add up the number of watts your lights and appliances on that circuit are using, divide by the typical voltage in your house (use 110V if your not sure to be on the safe side) If the answer is close to or more than 20A you need to think about recircuiting some of your stuff to distribute the load over other, less used circuits. Meanwhile, compact fluorescents have a much smaller current draw and some of them work reasonably well on dimmers. Good luck!
