A Homeowners Recipe to Safety
Know your roof.
What kind of a roof do you have?
is your roof steep, does it have multiple levels that look great with lots of lights during the holiday? Is it flat but more then six feet from roof to the ground below?
if you answered yes to any of these questions then the safety option for you is a Roof Fall Protection System, but not to worry, this is not rocket science and a simple option to use at home is available to you which I will go into detail a little later on, but first let's get on with the next ingredient for homeowner safety.
Stay away from bad weather.
Unless you're a fish, you probably don't want to be out in all that rain anyways.
The chores can wait for a safer, dryer climate for you to work on. Don't rush up on the roof in bad weather. If it feels scary, that might just be your first clue that you should wait for calmer skies.
Adding to our recipe
Use good rubber soled shoes
If possible have your ladder extend out at least 3 feet from your roof.
Keep ladder level; use plywood underneath it if you need to.

Safety in a bucket!
As I mentioned earlier, a Roof Fall Protection System is a great option for the homeowner to purchase for continued safety use year after year. These are not very expensive around $100.00-$150.00 and supply everything you need for solid safety and peace of mind.

- While there are a variety of Roofing Kits out there, most come with everything you need in one bucket.
- Safety Harness
- 25 ft or 50 ft rope
- Minimum six-foot safety lanyard.
- D Ring connectors
- Reusable or Disposable roof anchors
So you have all the gear now what?
- Read the directions
- This should go without saying, but I personally know many folks who do not take the time to read the directions on anything. In a nutshell, you need to make sure you fasten your anchor securely. Solid wood, rafters, trusses and beams. Never secure to plywood or go through the thin roof boards.
- Measure the distance from your tie off point to the ground. Lengthen or tighten the slack on your rope as needed.
- Never reach for something, but stop and move your ladder or adjust your rope while on the roof as needed.

What's the best software to design a light gauge steel truss structure for ROOF ?

Personally, I'm fond of ANSYS. However, it's not very user friendly if you're not needing a full FEA program. Not to mention, a single seat is going to cost you a fortune. While I've never used JFBA, it does look like a fairly user friendly program that would give you some pretty graphics to show customers. The Aegis group seems like they would be useful, especially if you don't mind farming out a good chunk of your engineering.
Now the bigger question, what are you wanting to do with it. Are you starting a truss company? If so, are you going to roll your own steel? If so, you are going to need a lot more software. If your going to buy from Dietrich, look into Aegis. Aegis is (kind of) part of Dietrich so it should be somewhat seamless. If you are just looking to add on to your house, or are a residential contractor, it will probably be cheaper to buy trusses, stick frame, or farm out the engineering. You're looking at about six grand for a single seat. Code enforcement is going to want a stamp on it anyway.
