Canon XA10 Professional Camcorder

The Canon XA10 Professional Camcorder is the all new entry level model in Canon's professional camcorder lineup. With 100 % 1920 x 1080 HD video recording capture, and twin phantom-power XLR inputs, the XA10 is going to be a major addition to their lineup.

My first impression of the XA10 is that it is basically a professional edition of the Canon VXIA HF G10, which in it's own right is an amazing camcorder. By having a carrying handle, XLR inputs and plenty of other powerful features, the XA10 is going to get you drooling over features that are difficult to find else where in a camera this small.

The XA10 is anchored by the state of the art 1/3-inch CMOS sensor, which offers a genuine 1920 x 1080 resolution, this will help prevent the noise which has found it's way into previous sensors.

The Canon is powered by a DIGIC DV III image processor. AVCHD video is achievable up to 24Mbps and 4:2:0 color space. This means that the XA10 can grab HD video in a variety of frame rates, ranging from 24 and 30p variations of 60i, the 24p being real deal.

A big part of this package is the 10x Zoom HD lens with a 35mm corresponding range of 30.4-304mm zoom. This camera includes an 8-blade iris, which ought to produce smoother bokeh plus eliminate diffraction.

The built-in stereo mic features a bunch of audio options, including the facility to zoom the directionality with the optical zoom. Also, the audio processing will allow the XA10 to switch on a built-in low pass filter, or place particular emphasis on lows, mids or highs. These features are able to be paired by means of the menu for effective control of the audio pickup.

Additional features of interest: The XLR inputs handle are manualy operated, whilst situated on the top of the camera are zoom and record start/stop controls. Meanwhile on the front of the carry handle is an infrared light and a tally lamp. The infra-red light is truly a great feature for anyone needing to record in total darkness.

The XA10 also has got the option to remove the infrared filter from the optical path. When in total darknes the infra-red emitter on the carry handle is undetectable to the human eye, nevertheless it provides sufficient lighting to record video where different cameras would probably at best show a black screen.

The lens ring appears to function rather effectively and is also straightforward when called up on. Also, for anyone looking at prosumer camera, you will be happy to learn that the new VIXIA G10, M40, M41 and M400 likewise don the manual lens ring.

Complete command over exposure is accessible via the customised key and dial function. With regard to manual mode, your able to use the dial to regulate the iris, gain or shutter. It's not quite as accessible when compared to other high end models, even so the control will be there.

Other pro functions include things like Focus Assist, that offers a 2x magnification for keying in in critical focus, plus an option for 70% or 100% zebras to aid in dialing in highlights. Bars and tone can also be found within the menu systems with -12dB, -18dB or -20dB tones available.

The XA10 comes with a 64GB built in flash drive (another step up from the G10's 32GB internal storage) plus dual SDXC card slots. Include a set of SDXC cards and this gives you around192GB of hard drive within your camera. Canon recommend a Class 4 or more SDHC or SDXC card to take 24Mbps or 17Mbps footage . SanDisk produce a 64GB card which is a practicable option.

64GB is more than enough for anyone's needs.. So the built-in storage along with 2 SD cards gets you 18 hours of High-definition footage at 24Mbps, particularly good when you consider the footprint your camera and storage take up.

In short, the XA10 appears like a real winner. Presently there is a lot of buzz and expectancy for this camera. While it's as professional looking as other camcorders in Canon's lineup, it still impresses with its size, and features.

Is it safe to plug a mixer into another mixer?

A band I'm in is playing for a church for it's VBS and the mixer board they have doesnt have enough inputs but we have another mixer that has a few extra inputs. The way everythings set up is there's wireless mics and a pulpit mic plus 2 xlrs into the wall that routes back to the back of the roo
for the piano and organ. So my plan was to plug another mixer into the xlr in the wall and put the guitars and bass on one channel (The piano channel on the main board). Is this safe or will it blow my mixer up? I did it once before with another mixer but that was after it was struck by lighting and crapped out worse last night. What do you guys think

As long as you're not plugging in the speaker outputs of a powered mixer to the input channel of another, it will work fine.

You'll want to come out of a main output on the submixer on stage.

The main thing you want to be concerned about is ground loops. If you hook it all up, bring the channel up on the main board, and you hear a hum...you've got a ground loop. The rule in audio is thou shalt have 1 path and 1 path only to ground.

If your submixer has a power supply between it and the AC plug, you should be OK. But, if it plugs directly into the AC plug, it might hum. Try it an see.

If you do wind up with a ground loop, the easiest thing to do is to use a Direct Injection (DI) box with a ground lift on it. In this case, you'll come out of an unbalanced output on the submixer and go to the DI. The output of the DI will be transformer isolated, and you'll plug that into your main mixer.

Go slow, and start with all of the faders at zero...you should be OK.
