Developing a new Pakistani Cricket team

Pakistan have their next series against West Indies. Pakistan vs West Indies series this month.

The past is history; the present a ghastly reality and hence it the future which is our only chance. It deserves attention. But before we get into the nitty gritty of this article, I wanted to share with the readers two gems that have emanated from worthy officials of the PCB. The first was an announcement made by a member of that incredible clan which has for ten years or more burrowed into the PCB. This family has everything that breeds success these days. It has staying power and ability to be of service to every new chief. It has ability to appear as the answer to all the prayers of the chief whether it is selection, election, management, coaching or marketing ability. The clan also has the mandatory quality of belonging to a province miraculously having all the talents needed by the cricket board. The announcement stated that the PCB (implication being him) was planning a T20 IPL look alike to be held in or outside Pakistan. Leaving aside the reality that PCB would be hard pressed to bring value to any tournament outside Pakistan one can only comment that this scheme has all the signs of leaving a wolf to look after a flock of lambs!

The second gem was voiced by some senior players and surely has roots within the PCB think tank. It was the demand for a batting coach. For heavens sake let us be real. Players who have played some 200 to 300 ODI's and have an average in the low 20's should are beyond coaching and should be ousted from the team. This ploy is a crude attempt at buying time and keeping deserving youngsters out of the side. Javed Miandad was this time sensible not to get talked into a losing proposition. A good batting coach is certainly needed in the Academy but I am not convinced that he should be from Pakistan.

The Pakistan Team touring the Windies has been termed as "youthful" by the Chairman and Chief Selector. It has an average age close to 30; taking their official ages into account which as we all know is hardly ever correct. It is not representative of a young side. The most glaring example of this wrong statement is the selection of the ‘young' Wicket Keeper who is 29 (31/32) years old. His selection has been justified by inconsistent and misleading use of previous performances. Even at 29 his best days are behind him. This selection has kept the most deserving Sarfaraz Ahmed out of the team whose performance in wicket keeping has been outstanding and his batting stands up to any sensible comparison; But that would not have suited the long term plans for the Akmal brothers who seem to have powerful supporters!

We have four youngsters in the current side touring the Windies. Whilst because of our spinners the results in the ODI's may well be positive it will not contribute towards the future of our cricket. The Windies are in a very perilous state themselves and have an almost new look team. They can at best be considered a ‘good club side'. The results thus may assist in giving the impression of success but this will only be a spin to give the current lot of worthies of our Board more time to continue their uncertain efforts. The PCB has 4 national domestic tournaments that could be used to judge the performance of our first class players. The Selection Committee, it seems, first takes what appears to be assisted decisions in selecting the squad and then refers to the tournament records that suit the specific choice. There is no consistency in using one or a standard set of averages to support the selections. This is proven by the fact that out of the four new names only one; Wahab Riaz appears in the top of the listed averages.

Amongst the upcoming bowlers, Mohammad Ramiz certainly appears very unlucky not to have been selected as his performance certainly merited his inclusion. Turning to the young talent available, the omission of young Mansoor Amjad (Sialkot) and Rameez Raja (Karachi) does not justify the development claims of our selectors. Two more cricketers growing out of the Under 19's who merited an association with the touring side if only for experience are batsman Abdullah Shah and left arm spinner Fawad Khan. A look at the over all performance of the names listed will show that our best available are not being given an opportunity to show their merit. This will grant our aging middle raters more unearned life but will not be of service to Pakistan Cricket.

In concluding, I would like to mention that Danish Kaneria, whatever his failings, the charges against him were never substantiated. His talent, experience and ability certainly warrant consideration in the team especially as somebody of the age of Abdul Rahman has been taken along. Surely he cannot be a threat to the leg spin of Afridi as he will not be a part of the Test Team.
