Strip Tillage - Do Not Commit Mistake Unknowingly
Strip-till creates 6 to 8 inches wide seedbed without disturbing the crop residue. It provides numerous economic and agronomic benefits. Increased soil fertility, saving in quantity of fertilizer, less fuel consumption and less use of machinery are just few benefits of strip tillage to name. Strip tilling is considered more environmental friendly if compared to full-width tilling. Though some farmers using strip tilling equipments first time may commit some mistake but if it is done under proper guidance, results are amazingly far better. Many manufacturers, agriculture research institutes and govt. run institutions offer free guidance. The strip cat is unique farming equipment. Users need to know it completely before use.
The strip-till unit may be used as a primary tilling tool to work over hard, compacted, rocky and stone infested soils that are almost impossible to break into conveniently manageable pieces. Users must be conscious to make the needed and recommended adjustments according to the soil, crop and weather conditions. Many users use strip tillage equipments of low power than that is ideally required. Generally, strip cat needs 20 to 30 hp per shank. The use of low power strip tilling equipments causes more frequent breakdowns and users feel a squeeze on the pocket. While deciding the HP of strip cat, nature of soil is the primary factor; free consultancy is available for this purpose.
Another mistake most of the first time users commit is the use of residue managers fitted with strip tilling attachment, while it should be fitted over planter. Though most agriculture equipments are made with utmost care to make them environmental friendly but even then overly exposure of tillage unit to winter weather may cause erosion; it results in flat fields losing the expected benefits of strip-till. It is a general practice to adjust the strip tilling unit at farm site instead of in the field. It is must to observe the operation of tilling unit, since user can't do it by self alone, so taking help of other person is good. Avoid making the strips deeper than 6-8 inches.
Never try to save by buying the strip cat of less popular brand or that of under power. Though you may save instantly but in long run, this saving proves much costly. Even if striping cat is not in use since a long time, it still needs maintenance. Generally, we ignore the tyre pressures, deposited soil in the groves, engine oil, condition of suspensions and battery condition etc. For this preventive maintenance, you don't need to be professional automobile engineer; just go through the manual.
