An audio interface is connection between external sound sources and a computer. Think of it a higher standard (professional) sound card with better sound (sampling rate), more ins and outs and lower latency (signal "delay"). Often, these interfaces are external units, connecting to the host (Mac or PC) with Firewire, USB or optical cables.
Audio interfaces may also have preamps built it.
A preamplifier is simply a first stage which raises the low level signal from sources like a vocal microphone to a level where it can be further processed or amplified, commonly called line level. A microphone preamplifier can also have tone controls (EQ) and the capability to deliver phantom power required for condenser microphones.
That said, producing professional sounding vocal recordings require far more than knowing about preamplifiers, audio interfaces and other technical bits and pieces.
First and foremost you will need someone with a good voice. Contrary to popular belief, most of the folks you hear recorded can actually sing - very much so. Yes there may be auto tune and other processing in use. But without a good performer in front, that processing makes little or no difference. A dead an lifeless voice can not be made to sound professional - no matter what.
Then, that vocalist need to have experience on how to sing in a recording scenario to get the best performance down "to tape".
You will typically need a high quality condenser vocal microphone to capture the performance. These are not your typical USB condenser mikes. A good quality vocal mike is very expensive.
Then you will need - if you aim at professional sounding audio standards - a preamplifier of high quality. The preamps typically found in inexpensive mixers and most audio interfaces will make the vocal flat and lifeless.
The next step is to have a good room or specialized vocal booth to record the vocal performance in.
Also, without a highly experiences recording engineer to capture the performance, you will almost guaranteed be dead in the water. You may capture something which is OK or even acceptable. professional... Not very likely.
The host program is also something you will need to consider if you want good results - Nuendo, Logic, Pro Tools etc.
Then comes the vocal processing with high quality reverb, delay, compression, EQ and what not. If the mixing engineer (another role than the recording process) doesn't know how to time effects such as reverb and delay, using correctly set pre-delay to get effects "out of the way" for the vocals - plus a huge amount of other "magic tricks", then again you will not get it to sound quite right. More often than not, it will sound like crap even if the material being recorded is good.
The person mixing the material will also need to be able to make a composite take of several vocal recordings and make a good composite take out of that (called comping), then blend the vocal materials with all the rest of the recorded materials (instruments and vocals) and make it all glue and stick together.
In order to be able to do this, you will need to have a good listening environment - good monitors in a good room, plus quality headphones.
the final stage which amateurs often forget to consider, is that a well recorded and professionally mixed performance is mastered (given a final "shine") by dedicated mastering engineers. The equipment these folks use is expensive beyond belief.
As you can see, there is a huge amount of variables which goes into capturing and producing the stuff you hear on radio every day.
Can someone be able to achieve these kind of results in a home studio environment. Probably, given the person has great tools and a wealth of experience. Better tools always tend to give better end results though - at least to some degree.
