What audio interface would you recommend for recording acousitc guitar and vocals?
I have an imac, I use garage band, and I'd like to get a fire-wire audio-interface. I've been looking at the Yamaha GO46 and the PreSonus Inspire 1394. I really only need to be able to record two simultaneous tracks. What audio-interfaces would your recommend for under 300$? Also maybe some good mics for vocal and acoustic recording?
The above poster made a good recommendation. The PreSonus firebox is pretty solid and it comes with Cubase that is good recording software.
Since you are looking for under $300, I'd recommend the Tapco Link Firewire. Tapco is a great underrated company. The original co-founder of Mackie, started Tapco and he makes a very solid product. I use their PA System, the Thumps in my house and for some gigs and their great.
Also Tapco Link Firewire comes with Tracktion, which I'll have to say is an awesome Recording Software. It's hands-down the easiest software to learn and use. I have Tracktion, Cubase and Pro Tools. Cubase and Pro Tools are very powerful, incredible softwares, but they take some time to learn and use to their full extent.
As for mics, yah the SM57 is a great, reasonable budget solution.
For vocals I use the Beta 87 by Shure, a good condenser for vocals. Neumann is the best recording mics you'll find, but they are in the $700+ range. Rode makes an awesome mic as well, you just need to find something in your budget.
