Remember that antennae, lovingly called ‘rabbit ears' finding its place of pride atop your television. Well, its days are numbered and it will have to be relegated to the basement till the next spring cleaning comes up. And what caused its swan song? Read on.
You have been hearing about something replacing the analog television. Yes, that very analog television which had managed to change our lives and bring entertainment right into our living rooms. Having weighed the pros against the cons, analog television will be considered somewhat redundant beginning June 2009. The antennae that we spoke of, picked the VHF and UHF frequencies, and brought those walking talking colorful images for you to enjoy. And this broadcasting method has been ruling the roost, ever since the inception of television.
However, with the passing of years, the focus shifted from the antennae to cable and satellite hook-ups. The antenna no longer was the be all and end all of your television viewing. Cable and satellite companies took it a step further by opting for the digital format and the images took a new look. This is not just something your neighbor will enjoy and you will think about. From now on, all TVs will have to pick up their channels digitally. You now are faced with a few choices, unlike the time when you had to go the antennae way. You could talk to your local cable company and opt for cable or satellite or you could go ahead and buy a digital converter box. Hold on, it does not end here. The FTA (free to air) receiver is slowly but surely catching up. And what's special about it? You can watch the very channels you have gotten so used to, and add many more to your list and get foreign language and arty programs as well. Quite a deal, what say? Now you need to know the finer points.
The last time that almost everything went on sale and almost everyone bought a whole lot of stuff, you got yourself an HD television – high-definition surely is the way to go! The flyers did you in and you are happy with the purchase. Being an early-bird, you paid a little less than $500. Now what you need is an FTA receiver which is compatible with high definition televisions. Your television is HD, so the FTA better pick up channels in high definition as well. That would cause a pocket-pinch of $300. Highly recommended is Viewsat HD 8000, value for money with a plethora of options. You will however have to take care that the installation is perfect and once routed with the right equipment, you see them all---ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS, in high definition. Weekends would never be the same again.
Are you done? Not quite. One more step. Go to the retailer and get yourself a satellite dish with a mounting kit. (You do not need to call Dish Network or Direct TV as they are paid satellite services). The mounting kit will have a manual and it will be your reading material for sometime now. You don't want to read that and keep referring to the page with a diagram and a whole lot of arrows? Go ahead, log on to Google search. Things just got easier.
Or a still better option will be to get in touch with goodfta from where you can have everything you'll need to get going, bet it the latest fta files or fta keys.
The dish needs to be mounted on the roof of your house or the balcony, if it is an apartment. It can also join the other garden stakes in your yard, perhaps in a corner. Where you would choose to place the dish will depend solely on the quality of the signal received.
With the dish in place and in sync with your FTA HD receiver, you will be spoilt for choice. There will be the FTA channels along with all the local ones, yours to watch, for free. The last two words are like music to your ears.
Now let's do a quick run-through of the cost-effectiveness of the whole process. Rounding off the price of the HD television, it comes to $500, the FTA receiver at $300 and the last buy was the satellite dish for $100. It comes to $900 and you are done. It gives you more channels than you have had so far, the reception is excellent and you pat yourself on the back for having got that HD television!
Do I have to pay a hefty bill every month for this awesome contraption? A reply in the negative will set your fears to rest. It will bring a slight upward change in your monthly electricity bill, such that you will not feel the pinch. Cable or paid satellite service would start at a minimum of $100 a month and $1200 annually. You spent $900 and already saved a whopping $300. I can almost see that smile.
Why just ponder on the expenses of this month or this year? Over time, you will be saving thousands of dollars. Television is up for the digital switch next month. Get that FTA receiver and the works. No missing the bus.
