What can i use to record my xbox gameplay and commentary?
something to record good quality gameplay and i can add in the audio of my commentary afterwards ( any program that will let me do that or if it comes with one) i tried the roxio game capture and it couldn't connect to my TV because there was no spot to plug the red green and blue cables on my TV (not sure if it didn't have to be RGB on the TV or if there was a way around it) and it was bad quality anyway.
also i was thinking of getting the Hauppauge HD PVR (i dont know if the last half is right) but the software to edit the video cost like $600 so i decided not to, but if there is any cheaper editing software that works for it (cheaper means under $100) let me know.
most people use a device called a hd pvr or a device called a capturing card to record video gameplay and then they add commentary to it later or while they are recording and playing. capture card require a somewhat computer to work, while hd pvrs don't need a computer.
your computer and operating system only matters if you are going to use a capture card. capture cards are anything that needs to connect to computers in order to record video gameplay video. all capture cards use software on your computer to control the capturing device. most capture cards connect via usb to your computer or plug into a pci slot on your rig.
there are many options that you can consider, but only a few that i will talk about. there is the hauppauge hd pvr, but the name is misleading because it is not a pvr. a pvr (personal video recorder) is a gameplay recorder that records video in a digital format to a external hard drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card, or internal hard drive. capture cards do none of that - they all need your computer to perform this essential important operation. therefore the hauppauge is a capture card just like the dazzle, but it can record in hd unlike a dazzle.
now since i brought up the dazzle, let me go over it really quickly. now you can buy a dazzle or dazzle hd, now again the name is misleading dazzle hd does not record in hd. it just comes with a better editing software that allows you to render videos in hd - this is the same thing as upconversion or upscaling, but its done through your computer with software and the pinnacle studios attachment (or dazzle device). you can accomplish the same thing with a ezcap or any of the many clones sold on eBay for dirt cheap.
there is another recorder that records directly from hdmi, but it needs a powerful computer and usb3.0. it also uses internal software on your computer and editing software. in fact most of them use editing software for the final cut of the videos. the other recorder i am talking about is blackmagic intensity pro.
the last one that i am going to talk about does not require your computer to use software which normally slows your system down. i know some might argue that H.264 compression does not hold your computer down as much, but in essence it does. H.264 helps, but its not a cure all.
moving right along to the next one, which is the capturing tristar hd pvr. this is a true pvr which means it can record to flash drive, jump drive, thumb drives, usb external drives, to internet connections, sd cards, sd memory, and to an internal hard drive. it does not require software to work, it includes its own internal software and can plug directly to your tv and xbox360. it uses upscaling or upconversion processes during live streaming and recording of the video game like the dazzle rendering software. it attempts to make videos into hd by outputing them onto your tv screen via a component, composite, s-video cables. it comes with a remote control and console buttons on the device to control all its functions. it can attach to your computer or mac via usb like the other capturing cards. it is as easy to use as an old school vcr. lol. the only problem i see with this is that it records from composite cables.
when it really comes down to it, you might really just need good editing software. with editing software you can make any dazzle, ezcap, tristar hd pvr look (almost) like blackmagic or hauppauge. but if you have the money then you should buy what you need. but if you are on a budget then i would recommend going with a real hd pvr and editing software.
