Attic Truss Design
When building a home today it is important to consider how your home will be framed, particularly when it comes to the roof and ceilings. Whereas older homes have been framed utilizing rafters and collar ties, this has become too expensive and time consuming for today's homes. Instead, the modern home is typically built using trusses. This is much more cost effective and saves time on labor.
Why Use the Attic Truss Design
Common trusses have some downsides. One of these downsides is that they leave no room for attic space. This can be easily fixed by specifically using an attic truss design. The attic truss design allows you to easily create attic space in your home similar to what you would have if you used the old rafter and collar tie design. In fact, you could wind up with even more space with the attic truss design.
How to Create Attic Space with Attic Truss Design
To create an attic storage space with the attic truss design, all you must do is use attic trusses instead of common trusses. Then, once you are all framed in, you will have created a rather large storage space above your ceiling. To make this space usable, you will need to put down a subfloor. This can be done by using plywood. Finally, you will need to have some type of attic access to use the space practically. This is usually a trap door in the ceiling that you have to use a ladder to get to. You can use a standalone ladder or build a pull down ladder into your trap door and attic.
Once you have completely built your attic space using an attic truss design and sub flooring, you will want to insulate it. A good choice is to use cellulose insulation. This is blown into the attic space through the subfloor until it comes out the other side. You can also insulate the door and ladder area. Insulation is important because you will want to be certain that the attic area created by your attic truss design stays somewhat temperature controlled. You also want to be certain that the room below the attic does not suffer in temperature.
The attic truss design is still cost effective. The complete difference in cost between using common trusses and creating attic space with an attic truss design is around two to five dollars per square foot. This is not a bad amount to pay above and beyond common trusses to make use of the attic truss design and have attic space that you can enjoy for years to come.
As you can see, using an attic truss design has many advantages for your home. It is cost effective, creates a wonderful storage space, and adds value to your home. The small amount of money used to choose an attic truss design over common trusses is not significant, and is well worth the storage space you will gain by using the design.

If I have two stands that can hold 300lb and turn them into a truss will it hold twice the weight?
I am using square truss to hold up the lights. I need to know because square truss has a weight that I need to factor in to the overall weight. I am planning to make the square truss 12 feet wide. This should not be a problem though knowing it is square truss. Tell me what you think no one can quite tell me if it changes the maximum weight or not because I am given different answers.
I think that instead of holding twice the weight if put together and the distance apart is doubled then they will only hold half the weight.
