I don't know what they are supposed to do. Is it not like a simple graphic equalizer on your stereo amplifier/receiver?
Those are not equalizer settings, they are audio filter modes. Here is an example of how a filter selector like that could be used;
On a shortwave radio signals can be received in a number of modes, like AM, SSB, Digital, etc. Often these signals are close together (or the radio is not very selective) causing "bleed over" of signals. Most of the time these signals also have to compete with natural or man-made noise (static) and other things that effect reception (fading, flutter, etc). The filter is used to help clean up the signal, remove some or most of the interference, and improve reception.
Imagine a window of frequencies as a horizontal line, with individual signals as spikes along the line...
- Band Pass - only allows signals to pass within the lower and upper frequency limits of the filter. If the filter is 3 kHz wide, it will only allow a 3 kHz window of signals to pass (1500 Hz either side of center). Think of it like an electronic canyon only so wide with steep walls on either side. As the received frequency is changed, the filter still only allows a window to get through. You set the signal you want to receive to the center of the filter. BP filters are usually fixed at a certain width, like 2.5 Khz (for SSB signals) or 500 Hz (for digital signals)
- Band Stop - Sort of the reverse of the Band Pass. This filter is instead an electronic mountain with steep walls X Hz wide, only allowing signals on either side to get through, vice the center.
- High Pass - Only one side of the bandpass filter canyon (the left wall?), allows signals on the high side (to the right or above) of the filter wall to get through (if you have an interfering signal slightly lower in frequency than the one you want to receive, set the edge of this filter to just below your target frequency to block the bad one out)
- Low Pass - The other side of the bandpass filter canyon (the right wall), allows signals on the low side (to the left or below) of the filter wall to get through.
- Notch - Much like the Bandpass filter, but usually has an adjustable width instead of a fixed value.
Filters like these are invaluable for cleaning up signals, especially on older radios. If you don't need it, put it up for sale on EBay. I'll buy it!
