Depeche Mode, Andrew Fletcher (keyboards) and Vince Clarke (keyboards, chief songwriter 1980–81). Vince Clarke left the band after the release of their 1981 debut album, and was replaced by Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, production) with Gore taking over songwriting. Wilder left the band in 1995 and since then Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher have continued as a trio.
Depeche Mode are one of the most successful, influential, longest-lived bands that have emerged from the early 1980s. They have had forty-five songs in the UK Singles Chart and #1 albums in UK, US and throughout Europe. According to EMI, Depeche Mode have sold over 75 million albums worldwide, as part of total worldwide record sales (including singles) in excess of 100 million.
Depeche Mode was the most popular synth/electro-pop band of the '80s. They reigned as kings of the club/dance scene throughout the decade and on into the '90s. The band's live show has always been the preferred method for experiencing the raw emotion and well-produced sound that is Depeche Mode. Lead singer David Gahan, Vince Clarke, Andrew Fletcher and Martin Gore make up the band that became Depeche Mode in the early 1980s. Their first album, Speak and Spell, in 1981 was considered part of the New Wave movement in music. Depeche Mode are to release new studio album, ‘Sounds Of The Universe’ on April 20, 2009 on Mute.
Recorded in Santa Barbara and New York with Ben Hillier, the band returned to their pioneering electro roots, using a lot of vintage analogue synthesisers and drum machines. Lyrically the release contains many of the group’s enduring obsessions plus more overt black humour than any of their previous collections.
Like their 2005 studio album, ‘Playing The Angel’, ‘Sounds Of The Universe’ features writing credits for both Martin Gore, the group’s primary songwriter, and Dave Gahan who after honing his talents on two solo albums, has earned his place as Depeche Mode’s second writer. The release also marks a reunion between the band and producer Ben Hillier (Blur, Doves, Elbow), who worked with the band to help give their new album its timeless sound. The album contains the first single from the release, ‘Wrong’. Other standout tracks include Martin Gore's velvet-lined Scott Walker croon on the sensual lounge-music ballad ‘Jezebel’, to the sci-fi gospel-blues hymn ‘In Chains’ and ‘Hole To Feed’..

What's the best vintage compact 35mm camera?
My wife owns a new lomo diana camera, but wants something different and vintage (1970's - 80's) for christmas. It must be compact, simple mechanics (point and shoot, rangefinder), and fairly inexpensive. What's the best bang for buck?
I shoot a Yashica Electro GSN, but she thinks it's too bulky.
Get a rangefinder for her.
Leica rangefinders were the best ones but you can find models from Zeiss, Canon also that did a fairly good job. You can even find some Russian copies of Leica rangefinders too in second hand shops.
