There are various forms of microphones available today. Among these condenser mics occupy a very prominent position and is widely used in the recording studios as these give out the most nuanced and the clearest of sounds. The term "condenser microphone" refers to the capacitor system where two plates with in between voltage are utilized to create sound. The external plate is called diaphragm and is usually made up of a light material which starts vibrating as the audio waves strike at it. There is also a strong metal plate. The vibration alters the gap in between these two plates which in turn changes the capacitance.
However, there must be a voltage present in between the plates for this function. Thus, the condenser mic has to be powered. There are many versions of condenser mics which run on phantom power. The phantom power is derived from any outer power source like mixing board. The other versions of condenser mics are charged by self-possessed battery. In both the cases, voltage provided to these mics enables the capacitance mechanism to work on. It even leads the condenser option terribly sensitive towards vibration making the mic a great option for many recording applications but usually a weaker one for the louder projects causing distortion.
Thus, the condenser feature is the ideal one for recording the vocals in the studio ambience. You may use the microphone in live concerts but keep note that it's more sensitive than the dynamic option. Hence, it's susceptible to pick up all the unwanted background noise from the room. So, the condenser microphones should not be engaged for recording the amplified instruments or louder instruments since louder frequencies running through the mics leads to unwanted distortion.
The condenser microphones are usually very expensive compared to the dynamic variation. But they are very fragile too. Try not to use them in live shows and if you still want to, use them as the drum mics. The condenser option usually comes in two varieties such as large and small diaphragm. The larger feature produces a very warm sound ideal for vocals. The small diaphragm mic produces a brighter audio conducive for recording the stringed instruments. Many of the condenser microphones come with two diaphragms jointly with these two diaphragms placed on either side of those mics. It enhances versatility of this unit.
However, never unplug your condenser microphone without switching off its phantom power. It would hurt the instrument leading to serious damage. Always handle it with care and never exhibit it in hard impacts.
