why use a beachtek xlr compact adapter for a camcorder instead of an XLR to 3.5 mm plug..?
I am wondering why spend $200 on a beachtek adapter instead of spending $10 on a regular piggyback plug (XLR to 3.5 mm). Is there a significant difference? I have a camcorder with a 3.5 mm hole and i plan to buy an XLR shotgun mic to use with it. i would need an adapter for the xlr cable to connect to my camcorder...can i use a regular piggyback plug like the one mentioned or is the Beachtek product necessary?
I agree with Palladin, but a bit more information on an answer...
1) The cable tail and cable can weigh a lot - and if the cable is accidentally pulled, can cause the 1/8" plug to break off in the camcorder - and cause even more problems.
2) Assuming you are using a mono shotgun mic, chances are very high that the camcorder will record only one channel of audio. This can be fixed during editing (clone the audio track and add it to the left audio channel).
Using an XLR adapter, if you select "M"ono and have only one mic, both the left and right channels in the camcorder will get the same signal and the above cloning step is not needed.
3) We don't know which mic you are using. Some - like the Audio Technica AT-875 require power. A good XLR adapter (like certain ones from BeachTek and juicedLink CX-231) can provide Phantom power to those mics needing power but not able to provide it by installing a battery. If you are using a mono mic that does have an on-board battery, the XLR tail will work, technically, but with the single channel recording issue from #2 above.
4) We don't know which camcorder you are using. Most consumer-grade camcorders' audio gain control (if the camcorder even has any audio gain control) is buried in the options menu and not a knob on the outside of the camcorder. Good XLR adapters have left and right audio gain control knobs - very handy for using multiple mics...
The "portable mixers" like the BeachTek and juicedLink units are designed to mount to the bottom of the camcorder. There is a tripod mounting hole in the bottom of the XLR adapter, so you are not losing any functionality... and the audio gain knobs are easy to access.
There are a few other reasons (reference the "sound floor" vids at juicedLink), but the above are the easy, low hanging fruit.
